All I Need to Know I Learned from My Cat
Suzy Becker has it right; cats can teach us amazing things. In her book, All I Need to Know I Learned from My Cat, Becker discusses in a comic-strip-style book the lessons she learned from her cat. You can also find an interesting list of cat-inspired knowledge nuggets here – some are more humorous than others.
We can all take away a lesson or two from our cats. Cats really don’t care what other people think about them, and they determine themselves who they want in their lives. I learned that from an interaction between my sweet cat, Lola, and my brother-in-law. I introduced the two, but my brother-in-law isn’t a fan of cats. Lola didn’t bother wasting her time begging for affection – she explored the backyard instead.
Cats always take time in life for the simple pleasures such as looking out the window or napping in the sun. Lola is fond of both of these – at night, when I’m asleep, she will sit quietly beside me and gaze out the window above my bed. She also loves finding the sunniest spot in the house, no matter where it is, and curling up for a deliciously lazy nap.
Our kitty friends take time to themselves and do things on their terms. They forage their own way in life by exploring and learning about the world around them. They take life slow and don’t seem to worry about too much. Again, I believe the very Aussie ‘no worries’ is also a favourite mantra in the cat world as well.
So let us learn something from these wise moggies. Is there something you have wanted to explore but you’re worried something might go wrong? Take advice from your cat and explore it anyway. It might be the best thing you have ever done and if it wasn’t at least you tried. Now I’m not saying quit your job and nap all day (although that would be a blissful way to spend an existence) but take the time to watch the world around you and enjoy the simple things in life.
What little life lessons has your cat taught you?

I have learned, from my cats – “If you do not leave me a clean litterbox – I WILL find your most expensive/favourite shoes … and PEE in them…” you have been warned…
