12-14 weeks is the best time for a kitten to go its new home – especially for the larger breeds like Ragdoll, Norwegian forest and Main Coone. It is also recommended for some of the smaller breeds like Siamese and oriental as they are also late maturing. The main reasons for the later age time to go to their new homes as they are generally better socialised. As registered breeders, we are appalled to see kittens of 6 weeks being given away or sold at petshops. At this age they are still dependant on the Queen and are only just starting to wean and getting used to solid foods. At this age their systems are still quite fragile. We also do not allow our kittens to go to their forever homes without being desexed, vaccinated and microchipped (microchipping is now the law in Victoria before going to their new homes), and desexing is best done when the kitten is at least 1 kg in weight. Contrary to popular misguided belief, early desexing is not detrimental to the kitten’s development, and they also bounce back from the operation quicker when they are younger.
