Cats Go Vegetarian
The vegetarian/vegan diet isn’t just for humans. Cat-food manufacturers also provide options for those owners who want their cats to have the same meat-free lifestyle, although
there is a relatively small demand for this. However, if you decide you want your cat to have a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle, it is important to understand what you’re putting in the cat bowl.
It is always important to keep in mind that cats are carnivores by nature. Their bodies require certain nutrients only found in meats to stay healthy. Diets based on unsupplemented vegetarian cat food may cause serious health issues because your cat is not getting the proper amino acids or vitamins they require. Vegetarian and vegan cat food makers do attempt to make up for the lack of nutrients through synthetic supplements in the food.
Be aware of whether or not the food you are buying contains everything your cat will require. Many people believe that a vegetarianism is not healthy for pets. In fact, some cats may eat their vegetarian choice, but still opt to hunt small birds or rodents to fulfil their meat cravings.
The choice is ultimately up to you as the provider, but it is important to understand your cat’s diet and needs before choosing a different lifestyle for them. There are even some recipes out there for do-it-yourself kitty meals to ensure your cat gets all their proper nutrients.

This is the most absurd thing I’ve ever heard. Cats are obligate carnivores and do not have the necessary enzymes in their guts to digest plant material. They should get only a very small percentage (2-4%) of plant material in their diets. Cats need to eat meat. It’s what they are built to do. Stop trying to convert a carnivore to a herbivore. They just can’t do it.

I totally agree with you Danielle. When cutting meat up for my 15 year old dog, my cats always jump onto the counter and steal their share. Bad habit, I know, lol, but at least they do get their share that way. They crave meat and will steal from the dogs any time they get the opportunity. They steal whole chicken wings and take them into their lair to eat them undiscovered by the dogs. Like dogs, their stomach evolved with the ability to deal with raw meat, bones and fur.

I eat vegetarian, but my cat doesn’t! I think it is strange to wanting to convert your cat (or dog) into a vegetarian just because you are. I don’t need meat and am very capable of finding substitutes, however that doesn’t go for my cat, so to keep him healthy, he eats meat and fish like any other carnivore on the planet.
