One Cool Cat

With spring and summer approaching, it’s important to keep your kitty cool. With some tasty treats and cool-down methods, your cat will be healthy, hydrated and happy to join you in some summer fun. Sun care is equally important for white and pale kitties, who are more prone to harmful sun damage. Use these tips to keep your kitty purring all summer long!

  • Sunscreen: This may seem silly at first, but for cats that are outside the majority of the time (and especially pale-coloured or white cats), sunscreen can prevent sun damage. Just like with humans, sunscreen particularly needs to be applied to ears and noses.
  • Shelter: It’s typically better to keep cats inside on hot days. But whether indoors or out, it’s crucial to provide them with shade and ample drinking water. Cats find it hard to cool off due to their coats and will generally choose to remain inactive and sleep most of the day to keep their body temperature down. Ample water will ensure they remain hydrated and can help cool themselves down.
  • Cars: NEVER leave your cat unattended in the car. If you must bring your cat along, make sure they are constantly cool and have plenty of water. Air conditioning is helpful when driving.
  • Treats: A block or bag of ice can be fun for your cat to lick and play with, while also keeping them cool. Try hiding ice cubes in their toys or leaving a few near their water bowl. They’ll be sure to thank you later!

Summer can be fun for everyone — just make sure your kitty is happy and hydrated.

I have a white cat and I had no idea they’re not supposed to be in the sun as they’re more prone to skin cancer. They are supposed to be indoors. My vet also made the suggestion of sunscreen, which I found to be silly at first, but it makes sense!
