Teeth tips for your cat

Posted by: Cat Diaries on 21 Jan 2009

The last place you want to go is inside a cat’s mouth! Unfortunately for cats, their teeth are just as susceptible to decay and disease as ours. Proper dental hygiene for a cat is a bit of work, but if you start young, it can become easier.

Taking care of your cat’s teeth requires brushing. This requires special techniques and brushes that your vet can help you find and instruct you on how to use.  It doesn’t have to be daily; twice a week is just fine. Discuss with your vet your cat’s diet to find out how often teeth cleaning should be undertaken.

You can also use a cat’s chewing ability to your advantage for more creative ways to clean. For those who really can’t get their cat to cooperate with teeth brushing, there are some cat foods that are designed to reduce plaque as your cat eats it. You can even floss your cat’s teeth by finding some kind of rope-chew toy. As they chew on the strands, it will clean in between their teeth; much like a floss.

Like a person, cats should go in for annual veterinary exams or cleanings. Cleanings are more rare so if you have been taking proper care of your cat’s teeth, you should be able to save some money is a clean is unneccessary.

Without proper dental hygiene, not only will you have to empty your wallet to pay for cleaning and fillings there is also the chance your cat will suffer from their dental issues – some signs of dental problems include bad breath, drooling and bleeding gums.

Hi,
I am a cat breeder. I have Rexes, abbys, selkirks, somali, and scottish folds.
I was wondering if you still had the little kitten packs when kittens go to their new homes. The one I have has a pen, a pack of advocate for kittens, fridge magnet, pamplet and a book called Surving the first 6 months with a kitten in your family. I found this to be an excellent package for new kitten owners. I believe I won this in a cat show.
Please could you let me know if they are still available for breeders, or would you consider donating some for our TFA shows.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Lanie.
