Hybrid Hype
In recent years, feline hybrids have become increasingly popular in the cat world. Often incorrectly referred to as Feral Domestic Hybrids, these crosses are properly called Cat/ Felid hybrids. Breeding domestic cats with wild Felids has led to beautiful felines, though often with very unique behavioural characteristics. While hybrid cats are intriguing, extensive research should be done before considering purchasing one or attempting to breed them. These cats are part Felid and as such must be handled and cared for according to their lineage. That being said, breeders and rescue organisations across the world have come across several very unique breeds.
Here is a list of some unique breed hybrids. For a more complete list, check out this page.
- Cheetoh: Ocicat / Bengal
- Punjabi: Domestic Cat with Indian Desert-Cat aka Asiatic Wildcat
- Bengal : Domestic Cat / Asian Leopard Cat
- Toyger: Domestic Cat / Bengal
- Pantherette: Pixie-bob/ Asian Leopard Cat
These are only a handful of the long list of domestic cats that have been crossbred with Felid species. Often these crosses are intended to capture the beautiful marking of wild cats with the lovely, docile nature of the domesticated kitty. Unfortunately there is no way to control which genes dominate and which do not. For this reason, many hybrids maintain the personality of a wild animal and thus should never be considered a domesticated breed. In fact, many experts point to rescue centers as ideal mixes of cats. Often ‘mixed’ breeds provide a unique combination of various breed characteristics that are highly desirable to any cat owner.
Feline hybrids are an interesting adventure the cat world has taken. However, if you are in the market for a new feline friend often local shelters have the coolest cross-cats in town and you can feel good about your choice because you’ve helped out an unwanted cat.
