When you wake up in the morning, you have your cup of coffee and breakfast, get ready for work and brush your teeth for the day. After a long day, you make your way to bed and brush your teeth. Once a year, you arrive at the dentist for your annual check-up and cleaning, giving your teeth that sparkling white glow. While all of this happens, your cat is on the road to developing some serious dental problems like gingivitis.

We will do anything for our furry companion as they are a part of our family, but we often neglect their teeth. Like us, if regular maintenance is not practiced, it can lead to many health  problems in cats. About 80% of cats develop some form of gum or teeth problems throughout their lifetime. Some, unfortunately even end up losing their teeth. Many of these dental diseases also can be very painful and in turn, affect the mood, personality and habits of your pet. Some will even not eat due to the pain.

The horror stories of dental disease can all be avoided. Cleaning your cat’s teeth is very easy. Following this simple process can insure a happier and healthier cat in their adult years. Some say daily teeth cleaning, while others say weekly cleaning is required for cats. Ask your veterinarian about the interval of teeth cleaning to insure the prevention of plague build-up and other dental diseases. Keeping their teeth healthy will also ward off other bodily diseases that can occur if the bacteria reach their bloodstream.

Like we go to the dentist for our annual check-up, cats also need to visit the veterinarian for a check-up. With the developing technology and methods, it is easier to detect developing problems. Also, it makes for a more comprehensive exam for their teeth and now there are cat orthodontists.
